A flexible strap bracelet of geometric design with a repeating stepped pattern set with baguette diamonds within a ground of pavé-set diamonds, completed by a rectangular clasp of similar design; mounted in platinum • 427 round and baguette diamonds, total weighing approximately 27 carats • Workshop mark for Henri Lavabre Breaking away from the traditions of the past, the Art Deco period from 1910 to the late 1930s introduced a new aesthetic that represented luxury, geometry, and a new machine-age culture. Gone were the romantic precepts and heavily decorative swags, bows, and festoons, of the previous decades; Art Deco design echoed the artistic movements and theoretical ideals filling the creative minds of a new generation. This new desire and opportunity for self-expression flooded jewelry design and new pieces were being made that were bold, geometric, and modern. Fashion changed as well and women began to wear more revealing outfits leaving room for long necklaces, pendant earrings, and stacks of bracelets. By the 1930s, the all-white Art Deco style was perfected and molded into new geometric forms of abstract and industrial influence. During this time the massive all-white link bracelet became popular and perfectly embodied the spirit of the times. Composed of a series of geometric shapes, this wide flexible strap is designed with a repeating step pattern of baguette diamonds, all suspended on a ground of pavé-set diamonds creating depth and texture. The dramatic contrast of angular shapes is combined with scintillating diamonds producing an austere yet feminine look. Made by the same workshop that created some of the most impressive jewels for Cartier, this bracelet bears the maker’s mark for Henri Lavabre, which is a horizontal lozenge with his initials HL flanking a four-leaf clover. As the owner of the workshop, Lavabre maintained an important relationship with Cartier and skillfully made exquisite jewels. This magnificent bracelet combines the impeccable quality of the workshop with a complex all-white design and remains thoroughly modern today. Biography Henri Lavabre owned a workshop on rue Tiquetonne in Paris where between 15 and 20 expert workmen crafted superb jewelry and objects of art. From 1906 to 1921 they worked exclusively for Cartier, and continued to fulfill commissions until the 1930s. They completed some of Cartier’s most exquisite and complicated designs, producing enamel objects, cigarette boxes, table clock cases, tiaras, bracelets and necklaces. In 1936, the workshop assembled Daisy Fellowes’s famous Hindu necklace for Cartier.
