About the Item

Margot van Voorhies Carr, professionally known as Margot de Taxco, was a major contributor to the success of Taxco silver. Margot first came to Mexico in 1937 and soon thereafter met and married Don Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo (another well know Mexican silver jewelry artist). During her time with him, he encouraged her to translate her designs from paper to three-dimensional forms in silver. Many early designs of Los Castillo bear the obvious contributions of Margot de Taxco. After divorcing Antonio, Margot went out on her own with a business card that read, “As the stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman”. Margot is most famous for her works in enamels on silver and her devotion to Art Deco, Mayan and Japanese-inspired motifs. Her clients at the time included such Hollywood celebrities as John Wayne and Lana Turner and her vintage silver pieces and stunning enamel work have become highly collectable today. This bracelet is one of Margot de Taxco's most recognizable designs and is a fine example of her amazing talent and creativity. It's a fabulous Vintage piece from the 1950s era and comprised of 13 sterling silver and enameled links that have a 3-dimensional design. The bracelet portrays the scaled body of a snake which beautifully coils around your wrist. The sterling links have a scaly surface with an amazing enameled design comprised of multicolored hues and a textured pattern visible through the translucent enameling. The tail and the head of the snake overlap and rest at the front and each link fits inside the next and attach by a sterling pin. The head of the snake shares the wonderful enameled design, black eyes and an open mouth to reveal it's slithering tongue. The piece clasps in the center of the body, and has a safety chain for added security and thanks to the curvature of the links, the bracelet rests comfortably around the wrist. On the underside one of the links are several markings: "MARGOT DE TAXCO" and the circular stamping "STERLING MADE IN MEXICO" which surround the number "16". There are also 4 numbers stamped into the link that look to be "5554". It's a wonderful bracelet and the ultimate piece for the Margot de Taxco collector! When closed, the interior of the bracelet, where a wrist would rest, measures approximately 2 1/8" wide and 2" tall. The body of the snake measures 1/2" wide and 1/4" in depth and the head measures 3/4" wide and slightly more than 1/4" in depth.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The bracelet is in great condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver setting and the clasp is secure in good working condition. There some minor damage to some of the enameled links, it is unnoticeable when worn.
