About the Item
Italy, circa 1790 This exceptionally rare early cameo bracelet is composed of five varicolored cameos superbly carved from Mount Vesuvius lava. The three larger cameos are executed in high relief, each depicting facing busts of ancient Roman gods and goddesses, intricately accented with snakes – a classical symbol of wisdom and regeneration. The principal cameos are interspaced with two smaller cameos finely carved with ram’s heads, framed by scrolling serpentine motifs. All cameos are mounted in two-tone gold: the yellow gold rosettes test electronically to approximately 19.76 Kt, while the rose gold clasp tests to 8Kt. The bold sculptural quality and dramatic relief of these 18th century carvings distinguish them from the more restrained cameo work of the 19th century, marking this bracelet as an outstanding example of late 18th century Italian neoclassical craftsmanship.
