About the Item

A fine cannetille brooch with an Indian/Persian miniature painting in the centre. The miniature features a royal or nobleman with a hookah pipe. It is a very detailed painting with pale yet vibrant colours. The piece is in 18k yellow gold and has makers marks. Cannetille jewellery features fine granulated gold wires and was popular in the early 19th Century. During this time gold was scarce and cannetille work required only a small amount of gold, yet it was a very skilled labor intensive work. The jewellery was also influenced by the aesthetics of the romantic period.
