A Victorian enamel, porcelain, and yellow gold brooch, comprising a circular porcelain panel, painted with enamel, in 9 karat yellow gold.
My favourite thing about this Antique 9K Yellow Gold Spaniel Brooch, is the beautifully detailed painting. What’s yours? Perhaps the shining yellow gold? Or the signature to the reverse?
This fetching brooch is centred upon a circular, domed panel of porcelain, upon which a springer spaniel is depicted. The brown and white spaniel is depicted on the move, with lush, green landscape behind. Verso, the panel is signed ‘W B Ford 1879’, for William Bishop Ford, a well-known miniature painter, who worked under William Essex. Ford produced enamel miniatures of mostly dogs and horses, studying at the Somerset House School of Design, and exhibiting at the Royal Academy. The painted panel is held within a yellow gold bezel and is further mounted to a yellow gold bar brooch. The brooch has a hinged pin and is complete with a safety-pin style catch, and safety chain. The brooch is in good condition, with some light scratching and areas of wear to the enamel, and evidence of an old solder repair to the pin hinge and safety chain. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The brooch measures 20.2mm long, 56.6mm wide, and 6mm deep (excluding pin and fittings).

Hallmarks: stamped ‘9CT’ (and tests as approximately 9 karat gold), bearing makers mark “H.G.S”, circa 1879
