About the Item
Reminiscent of twinkling stars in the night sky, this Victorian-era brooch features rose-diamonds set atop cobalt blue glass. Rings of similar style that featured precious diamonds with cobalt (or rarely, purple) glass were popular during the 18th-century and known as “bague au firmament,” or “ring of the heavens.” Bague au firmament rings were based on an original design created for Marie Antoinette, a gift from her husband Louis XVI. In fact, bague au firmament rings can in fact be spotted upon the hand of Marie Antoinette in portrait paintings of the French queen.
Due to the fragile nature of cobalt glass when used in a ring, a brooch would have been (and still is) a sweet yet practical way to gift the sentiment of all the stars in the sky to your beloved.
