About the Item

An Art Nouveau grasshopper brooch, the realistically carved insect with a cabochon ruby-set eye, the wings in shaded green opalescent champlevé enamel encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, the tergum consisted of a pear-shaped cabochon opal and the finely engraved sternite flanked with rose-cut diamonds, all mounted in yellow gold and silver, with gold brooch fitting, circa 1900,measuring approximately 5.5 x 3 cm, gross weight 17.6 grams. This antique brooch is in very good condition for its age. Minor traces of solder maybe seen securing the opal collet to the mount. Unmarked tested as 18ct gold and silver. This astonishing brooch was made at the turn of the twentieth century and comes from the collection of Bentley Skinner, Jewellers by Royal Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III. Incredibly detailed and naturalistic, this grasshopper brooch is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau design and craftsmanship. The body of the insect features a bright and vivid blue opal, tallow and green enamel, rose-cut diamonds, and a cabochon-cut ruby eye all set in bright yellow gold. This is a unique, eye-catching, and remarkable piece, full of exquisite detail and character.
