About the Item

Strongly resembling the Harry Bertoia Foundation's archived c.1947 unsigned small brooch (D.JE.27) that is essentially an elegant hammered silver curvilinear three-humped squiggle by the late artist, this modern abstract three-dimensional brooch is also an unsigned single hammered-silver wire that was shaped into an undulating three-humped squiggle that instead ends in a spiral. Like the additional wire that is "laced" through the rivets of the archived Bertoia piece to add contrast with angular shapes, our brooch has a contrasting linear element defined by its sharpened pin, which fastens with a c-clasp formed by the hammered curved end. Its compelling biomorphic design, minimalism, and decades-old patina suggest that it is a mid-century brooch, which could have been made by one of the pioneers of American studio jewelry, such as Alexander Calder or Art Smith who designed in a similar one-off way. However, they usually crafted much larger brooches that could include a maker's mark. Only limited-edition jewelry reproduced by the Harry Bertoia Foundation includes a branded signature. According to the Foundation, most of Bertoia's one-of-a-kind jewelry that it dates as early as 1934 was made while he was a student at Cranbrook Academy of Art when he used whatever metal materials he could afford. Significant to our brooch, many of his early brooches have a sharpened pin and hand-tooled bent wire substituting for a hinge and clasp, such as the one of approximately the same 2-inch size in the Foundation archive dated 1939-1943 (D.JE.25), as well as the partly-hammered wire squiggle clasp on the sterling silver necklace dated 1940-1943 (D.JE.50) that has similar tool marks. While at Cranbrook, he also used the distinctive squiggle shape to style a figurative snake as a more complex silver brooch. After he made the aforementioned pieces and prior to focusing on furniture and sculpture, Bertoia began fabricating metal jewelry that included not only bent and hammered wire but also forged pieces with rivets and/or clamps that characteristically link multiple cut or cast parts often with kinetic properties. Of the hundreds of unique works of jewelry attributed to Bertoia (1915-1978), the majority were made while he was at Cranbrook, which extended to his post-graduate work as a metal-smithing instructor there until 1943.

Modernist BertoiaStyle Kinetic Silver 8Bead SpiralWire 3Band Asymmetric MensRing
Located in Chicago, IL
Recalling some early-mid-century modernist one-of-a-kind unsigned silver jewelry featuring delicate kinetic parts, tiny forged balls, and thin-wire work by American metal-worker Harry Bertoia, this aged silver unsigned spiraled wire open ring with essentially 3 bands is structured with 3 silver beads forged on both ends and in the center that are notably misaligned. The additional 5 among the 8 balls are kinetic for sliding, but only from one end to the fixed central ball. The subtle asymmetrical design encourages the wearer to think about the single ball--that is identical to the others--that will always remain isolated, unlike mindlessly toying with a traditional "fidget" ring or bracelet. For insight, view the early silver rings and wire brooches by the artist found in the online catalogue raisonne assembled by the Harry Bertoia Foundation, which may authenticate his unsigned jewelry for a fee that was prohibitive to us while we offer it for sale. Do not overlook his circa-1940 mens-size aluminum 3-sectioned open ring topped with 3 rows of 5 adjacent small matching geometric shapes, nor his circa-1943 spiraled-wire hatpin with 3 white beads, which share significant aesthetics with our inch-diameter ring including the numeric 1-3-5-8 elements. Unlike the ring that we found, those unsigned Bertoia pieces have documented provenance. Comparatively, another 1stDibs dealer is currently offering an unauthenticated early-Bertoia-style silver wire pendant...

ModernArtist SilverWire Geometric Spirals HandmadeWithPliers Seven Link Bracelet
Located in Chicago, IL
This modern one-of-a-kind geometric-spirals seven-link bracelet was expertly handmade from silver wire dating to the 20th Century in a style not earlier than Art Deco. There are no marks or jewelry techniques other than from the pliers used to bend the wire into the seven differently-shaped links. If not by mid-century artist Alexander Calder, it is in the style of his thousands of pieces of plier-bent wire jewelry that were astonishingly all unique. This attractive bracelet with atypical three-dimensional pieces would have been reproduced if it had been created by a jewelry designer. While a variety of geometric shapes are often combined in wire bracelets...
