About the Item
Colombian emerald and diamond bar brooch. Set to centre with an octagonal-emerald cut natural Colombian emerald with insignificant oil and rare 'gota de aceite' effect, in an open back rubover setting with an approximate weight of 1.90 carats, flanked by two cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back rubover settings with a combined approximate weight of 1.65 carats, and further set with ten round old cut diamonds in open back grain settings with a combined weight of 1.75 carats, terminating in two drop shape old cut diamonds in open back grain settings with a combined weight of 0.50 carats and four round rose cut diamonds in open back grain settings with a combined weight of 0.04 carats. The total approximate diamond weight is 3.94 carats, to an exceptional bar brooch featuring millegrain edging, a pierced linear gallery and fancy shape open backholing, fitted to reverse with a secure pin and barrel safety clasp, approximately 7.3cm in length. Marked platinum, clasp tested white gold, French import mark, circa 1920, accompanied by Laboratoire Gemmologique de Paris report #20231977052 and fitted box.
The most prized phenomenon that can be seen in a Colombian emerald is known as 'gota de aceite' ('drop of oil' in Spanish), or 'butterfly wings'. Microscopic inclusions, caused by growth irregularities within the crystal, act to scatter the light, spreading the colour and reducing extinction within the stone.
'Gota de aceite' produces a beautiful velvety texture within the emerald, often described as having the appearance of roiled oil or honey. This is highly desirable, and comparable to the velvety appearance of a Kashmir sapphire.
Exceptionally rare, this phenomenon is seen in only the very finest of Colombian emeralds, further adding to their allure, and value.
