About the Item
The most eye-catching detail in this bejeweled brooch, whether it depicts a cornucopia of grapes or a bouquet of flowers, is the stem pointed upwards at the top of the composition. The stem does not function doubly as a loop for a pendant but is simply a design detail conveying a previous connection to the natural world, embellished with three optical baguette-cut diamonds. The overflowing abundance of the composition is what draws us to this piece, which happens to be made in the 21st century, circa 2010s; but based on the combination of materials and color palette, could easily be from a century or more before.
The double pinstem brooch, which measures 2 inches in length (5.08 cm), is crafted in platinum and features round and baguette diamonds with an estimated weight of 4 carats of F-H color and VS-SI clarity alongside round cultured pearls, both black and white. The diamonds and pearls spill over in all directions, sometimes in cascades like waterfalls, sometimes set in leaves that flop over generously, and sometimes building up a terrific volume, front and center. The way the pearls are set as beads is particularly sensual, curvaceous, and flirtatious, with a feminine voluptuousness. The hole at the center of the pearl is transformed into a decorative feature, each adorned with two concentric circles in platinum, with the exception of the black pearl at the very center of the composition which remains stark in contrast.
The cascade at the lower left, comprised of three rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds, each set with four prongs, is beautifully balanced with the cascade of white pearls at the lower right. Overlapping leaves set with pavé diamonds flow around the upper half of the composition. One leaf breaks the pattern and is so specifically notched with an elongated oval, as if to tell us what type it is. Two smaller leaves barely visible from the front continue the flow. There is a lot of skillful glorious movement in this jeweled brooch that makes it a timeless delight to wear.
Measures approx. 2” in length. Diamond weight approx. 4.00 carats; estimated F-H colors, VS-SI clarity. Cultured pearls. Overall weight approx. 29.72 grams, made in platinum. Circa 2010s.
