About the Item

An exceedingly rare and highly coveted platinum, natural unheated Sri Lankan sapphire, and old-mine cut diamond pin in the shape of a balloon with a bow. This magnificent piece is Edwardian and hails from the last decade of the 19th century. The cabochon sapphire weighs approximately 13.50 carats and is accompanied by a GIA report which states that the stone is of Sri Lankan origin and shows no indication of heat treatment. The diamonds weigh a total of approximately 3.50 carats and are bordered throughout with a very fine and attractive milgrain finish, typical of the period. Platinum's real achievement was in rendering heavy stones and mountings in a way that appeared visually weightless. Under the auspices of the luxury loving King Edward VII of England, for whom the Edwardian period is named, innovations in the world of fine jewelry making such as platinum gained a wider audience. In light of this particular piece's exceptional craftsmanship and historical importance, it is an ideal candidate for a serious antique jewelry collection. -Platinum -Sapphire and diamond -Sapphire weighing approximately 13.50 carats and accompanied by a GIA certificate attesting to its origins and lack of heat treatment. -Diamonds weighing a total of approximately 3.50 carats -Circa 1890s, Edwardian
