This enchanting 1890s pin is crafted in 14 karat yellow gold and depicts a delicate pansy motif in blue, white, black, and yellow enamel. A single 2mm round paste stone—lead glass cut to sparkle like a gemstone—sits at the center. Paste was widely used in the 19th century to emulate gemstones affordably, allowing jewelers to create shimmering, intricate designs.
The pansy, a Victorian symbol of thoughtfulness, remembrance, and love, is beautifully rendered here with period charm. The pin measures approximately 1 inch in diameter with a ½-inch pin stem and locking clasp, weighs 6.05 grams, and shows minor enamel loss consistent with age; the clasp has been replaced.
