About the Item

This early Miriam Haskell lacquered-shell and brass-and-wood-decorated clip brooch was created by Frank Hess, her first designer since 1926. The c.1930 brooch features three seashells supporting an asymmetrical arrangement of textural Russian-gold gilt flowers, leaves, berries and a filagree ball, topped in the background by a dark-stained carved-wood leaf. Additionally, shell bands with natural iridescence catch the light at different angles to add rainbow color and luminosity more subtle than mother-of-pearl. The shells conceal the perforated metal plate through which the decorative pieces were wired by hand. Characteristic of 1930s brooches that required wiring/sewing, an additional smooth metal plate in back supports the strong clip, which is ideal to use on thick or stiff fabric, such as a jacket lapel, dress neckline or hat band. The distinctive antique brooch is unsigned like all pieces by the duo before 1947. For another seashell still-life by Hess, please see our listing for an older 1920s white-glass beaded sautoir necklace, among our other Haskell pre-1950 costume jewelry.
