About the Item

A pair of Victorian rock crystal and yellow gold cufflinks, each comprising two round cabochons of rock crystal, painted with the image of a fox, set in 18 karat yellow gold, with 18 karat yellow gold fittings. My favourite thing about these Victorian 18K Yellow Gold Reverse Carved Intaglio Cufflinks is the beautiful images of the foxes. What’s yours? Perhaps the smooth dome of the rock crystal? Or the buttery yellow gold? These charming Victorian cufflinks each depict a cheerful looking, open-mouthed fox. These reverse carved intaglios are often referred to as ‘Essex crystal’, after William Essex who was well-known for creating these beautiful carved and painted pieces. The rock crystal will have been carved with the image, and then painted in reverse, with the smallest details first. This work is particularly fine, the details of the foxes are wonderfully lifelike, and if you have come across reverse carved intaglio pieces, you will know that not all are created equal, as it is a very tricky and skilled process! The beautifully painted foxes are a true-to-life russet colour, with their ears, eyes, and nose picked out in a deep brown, and highlighted with white. The rock crystal cabochons are held within yellow gold bezel settings and have a closed back. The cufflinks are fitted with a clip fitting, allowing the cufflinks to be removed and worn as dress studs (using additional fittings) should it be desired. The cufflinks are in great condition, with only minor wear to the rock crystal cabochons. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. Cufflink face size: 15mm x 15mm x 9mm Gross weight: 14.3g Hallmarks: stamped ‘18’ to each, tests as 18 karat gold, circa 1880 Your cufflinks will be placed in their antique, brown leather, tooled case, with cream velvet and silk interior, stamped “Longman Strongi’th’arm Ld. By appointment and Widdowson Veale 1, Albemarle St, Piccadilly, W.1.”.
