About the Item
Delicate and refined chain earrings with clip-on backs in 925 sterling silver. Featuring three sterling silver filigree beads, handcrafted using the traditional silver filigree technique. Also known as "wedding nurse earrings," they are very popular in the folklore and customs of Salamanca, Spain. A spectacular and truly special piece, ideal for the upcoming season!
The Origin of Filigree
Filigree is a goldsmithing technique widely used in artisanal jewelry. It consists of filling spaces with fine threads of silver and gold that are interwoven to create patterns and form hollow designs or a lace-like pattern.
Filigree was a goldsmithing technique used in ancient civilizations. The Greeks, Egyptians, and Etruscans used it to work with gold and silver. The Byzantines perfected the technique and created the well-known cloisonné or Byzantine luster. It was also used in China and India to create decorative elements. And in pre-Columbian America, the work of goldsmiths was widespread.
Silver filigree was practiced by the Arabs in Spain during the Middle Ages. It spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula and reached the Spanish colonies in America.
In Spain, filigree has continued to be part of the jewelry tradition, especially in the south, where we can still find many workshops of artisans specializing in this technique, as well as in regional folklore traditions to complement the traditional and representative clothing of a region, as is the case with the Charro folklore of Salamanca, Spain.
