About the Item
The town of Whitby in England was home to the most prolific and able makers of jet jewelry. When Price Albert suddenly died, his untimely death shocked his wife, Queen Victoria and the entire population of Great Britain. Queen Victoria went into a long period of deep mourning for her beloved husband. She ordered that no jewels other than black be worn in her presence. Her court donned jet jewelry. The people of her nation did the same. They did so in honor of the royal couple and as time went by, for the appreciation of the beauty of jet as well. Jet production in Whitby became bountiful. Jet is a natural material. It is coal that has been fossilized. Polished to a shine, the jewelers of Whitby created extraordinary geometric, jewelry that is sought by collectors of antique jewelry around the world.
