About the Item
These magnificent earrings came to us as a magnificent fur clip, but Eytan decided they would get more wear on some lucky earlobes.
The workmanship is incredible. Every stone -- all 219 of them -- is neatly backholed. Every petal and every ribbon is different. The stones vary minutely in size to perfectly accommodate their particular component.
The fierce green emerald pear cabochons show typical inclusions. One is darker and slightly larger than the other, just as the earrings themselves are not carbon copies of each other. The lighter emerald shows a small abrasion near the upper left prong. The estimated weights of these beautiful old souls are 3.2 carats and 2.8 carats. Given their age and intense color, we think it's safe to assume they're Colombian. The original brooch was purchased by the grandfather of one of our longtime customers. The purchase was made in Europe after WWII at an estate jewelry house, and we think the brooch was probably made in the 1930's. The emeralds have not been subjected to any kind of treatment (i.e., fracture filling, or "oiling") since entering the possession of our client, so if they were given any oil treatment before 1945, it's long dried out and is not detectable under a loupe.
One earring has 105 diamonds and the other has 112. There are 17 prong-set diamonds located at the tips of the outer spines and at the bases of the two "flowers." These diamonds are all brilliant cut and vary in size but average about 3.5 points each. Eytan rates these stones in at least the VS2 range with H-I color.
The other 200 diamonds are single cut rounds - all different sizes, all very small, and totaling about 1.4 carats.
We tested the metal and guarantee it to be platinum, except for the emerald prong baskets, which are yellow gold. Eytan dipped the prongs with white rhodium, but you can see the yellow gold on each earring's underside.
Despite the weight, I gleefully test-drove these for a day and they're surprisingly comfortable and hang just right, framing the face beautifully.
