About the Item
These rare, incredible David Spada, New York, signed clip-on earrings feature a playful Space Age 1980s design, articulated spirally coiled elements that dangle, and assorted-size rings. The anodized aluminum metal is bright and colorful: turquoise, hot purple, saffron, army green, yellow, red, and blue. Some of the rings are ornate with painted black dots. One earring is signed on the underside of the fastening and reads Spada.
Measurements: 1.82 in wide (4.6 cm) by 4.25 in high(10.9 cm)
Reference: David Spada (December 5, 1961 - May 13, 1996) was a jewelry designer in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s and the creator and marketer of Freedom Rings
Spada attended the Parsons School of Design in the early 1980s, graduating around 1982.
He began making jewelry as a student, and his work gained recognition as early as 1984, when The New York Times featured a piece crafted from orange rubber tubing.
Spada became known for his work in colored anodized aluminum, creating a wide range of shapes from the material, including rings, earrings, clothing, and swimwear adorned with aluminum decorations. He eventually opened a boutique, Casa di Spada, in New York's Lower East Side, which sold his jewelry designs, clothing, and custom items.
According to a 1992 NY Times article, freedom rings were introduced in 1991 in San Francisco as a fundraising item at the gay and lesbian community's annual Freedom Day Parade and quickly became a national trend. The colored aluminum rings come in rainbow colors, based on the gay pride flag, and have evolved as a symbol of Gay Pride. Spada used to say, " The colors symbolize happiness and represent the diversity of the community."
Spada died of AIDS complications on May 13, 1996.
