Nobody can control the fly, even in totalitarian state, where everybody’s life and movements can be limited and controlled, the fly is free.” – Ilya Kabakov The Fly jewellery was originally designed by Ilya Kabakov in 1992 for his wife Emilia, but was not realised until 2010 when Elisabetta Cipriani proposed for the project to be finally executed. The collection is composed of a bracelet, ring, earrings and a necklace representing flies resting on twigs and leaves. The Fly, one of Kabakov’s best known recurring motifs, is a metaphor for their homeland, waste, and human lives as well as a symbol of the soul, liberated from the bonds of early existence. None of these interpretations cancel out the other. Flies move freely and unnoticed from place to place and alight on the most varied objects, from the most commonplace and profane to the most elevated and sacred without distinguishing between their values. The jewellery are also read with the same interpretation, while the “classical” style in which they have been realised have a strong reference to the artists’ Russian origins. Ilya Emilia Kabakov (USSR, b 1933) are Russian-born, American-based artists that collaborate on environments which fuse elements of the everyday with those of the conceptual. While their work is deeply rooted in the Soviet social and cultural context in which the Kabakovs come to age, their work still attains a universal significance. Today they are recognised as the most important Russian artists after the post war. After leaving the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, Ilya Kabakov’s satirical drawings developed into his signature “total installations” – all encompassing environments accompanied by tragicomic narrative texts. Made in collaboration with his wife Emilia Kabakov, these nostalgic installations often incorporate forgotten elements of Soviet life, such as social realist propaganda, worn-out kitchen items, and communal living arrangements. The Kabakovs’ work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and in the Whitney Biennial. In 1993 the duo represented Russia at the 45th Venice Biennale. In 2017 they will be doing a retrospective at Tate Modern, London

The earrings are made of 14 karat yellow gold and encrusted with 6 round diamonds and detachable cabochon tourmaline drops. The earrings are versatile as you can replace the tourmaline drops with other gems or wear the earrings without the drops for a simpler look. The size of one earring is 2x1.7 cm, and the depth without a lock is 5 mm. We use top natural diamonds with VS clarity and F-G color, and work with a German gemstone company that has been in the market since the 19th century. The sculptural design provides an extra shiny surface of the flowers and a subtle play of shadow and light.
