About the Item
Classic pearl and gilt earrings , designed by Victoire de Castellane for Chanel, with a wide gilt 'thumb indented' border, in which is nestled a larger baroque pearl cabuchon. Very smart, a prime example of Castellane's oeuvre at Chanel at this time - and ulitmately very wearable!
Not much needs to be said about Coco Chanel, so famous and successful a designer is she!
Chanel opened her first boutique in 1924, many years in advance of what was to become a worldwide and continuing fashion. Whilst many disapproved of costume jewellery , praising fine or real jewellery, Chanel championed the merits of faux jewellery, often mixing both together, stating that real jewellery would no more enhance the wearer that faux! This supremacy of costume jewellery over real continued all through her career, (all of which is now legendary,through numerous books and films.), continuing right through to the creations of the house in the current day.
