About the Item
We got a very old, very boring pair of 18 karat gold monogrammed cufflinks from a customer and melted them quicker than you can say, "Just cuz it's old doesn't mean it's cool!" but we kept the backs -- the parts that Mr. Cufflink User would slip through his button holes -- because they are so beautiful! Whatever company made those boring cufflinks probably used this exceptional design thousands of times (for thousands of otherwise boring cufflinks, no doubt), and they spent all their time hidden in guys' cuffs!
Eytan Brandes made a mold from the design so that he can use it in the future, but this pair is the original, so it has the maker's mark -- GS -- on the back. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to turn up any likely suspects for this mark, so we're not sure when the cufflinks were made, but the design screams Art Nouveau, so we're thinking early 20th century.
The cufflink doo-dads hang from simple shepherds hook wire and are hinged over gorgeous little Akoya (cultured Japanese saltwater) pearls, about 7mm each, from our trusted pearl dealer, Seven Seas Pearls. Seven Seas deals only in saltwater pearls -- Tahitian, South Sea and Akoya. Nothing freshwater and nothing from China. This pair is baroque and untreated -- that amazing luster, pink and green overtones and shimmery silver body color are exclusively thanks to a couple of talented oysters.
These earrings are 1-3/4" long and weigh 4.1 grams. All metal (the cufflink doo-dads, the shepherds hook wires and the connecting bits) is 18 karat gold.

- Condition:Additions or alterations made to the original: The 18 karat gold doo-dads are converted cufflink backs. Polished. The pearls and the 18 karat gold wires are new, but the 18K gold cufflinks backs probably date from 1910 or earlier. Eytan removed the center hardware and polished them thoroughly to remove any scratches or solder scars.
