About the Item
These stunning modernist David Spada New York important clip-on earrings feature a Space Age 1980s design with a dangling extra-large spiral coiled shape. These rare pieces are made of anodized aluminum metal in silver color with patchy multicolor paint application. Each earring is engraved with the brand logo on the metal.
Dimensions: 2.75 in width (6.9 cm) by 3.82 in height (9.7 cm).
Reference: David Spada (December 5, 1961 - May 13, 1996) was a jewelry designer in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s and the creator and marketer of Freedom Rings
Spada attended the Parsons School of Design in the early 1980s, graduating around 1982.
He began making jewelry as a student, and his work gained recognition as early as 1984 when a piece made from orange rubber tubing was featured in the New York Times.
Spada became known for his creations in colored anodized aluminum, crafting a wide range of shapes from the material, including rings, earrings, clothing, and swimwear embellished with aluminum decor.
He eventually opened a boutique, Casa di Spada, in New York's Lower East Side, which sold his jewelry designs, clothing, and custom items.
According to a 1992 NY Times article, the freedom rings were introduced in 1991 in San Francisco as a fundraising item at the gay and lesbian Community's annual Freedom Day Parade and quickly became a national trend. The colored aluminum rings come in rainbow colors, based on the gay pride flag, and have evolved as a symbol of Gay Pride.
"Colors symbolize happiness and feature the community's diversity," David Spada said.
Spada died of AIDS complications on May 13, 1996.
