About the Item
Hobe 18th Century revivalist long earring, of gilt metal,crystal and hand tinted chromo lithographs of an 18th century courtesan.
Hobe et Cie was founded in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe. His concept was to use fine jewelry techniques and non-precious materials to create jewelry for the middle class as well as for the wealthy. Brought to America in 1915 by his son William, Hobe jewelry was popular not only with everyday customers, but also with the Hollywood stars and such luminaries as Flo Ziegfield. Inspired by period jewelry of the past, Hobe jewelry had an historic flavor throughout its early period. 1930's USA.

The earrings are in three sections, the top two being frilly fine spirals of iron with a silver heart at top. The bottom section is a classical portrait , both male and female on a background of shining steel. The figures would have been recognized in 1820. These are made in Gleiwitz, Germany. By now I have written much about Berlin Iron, as I sell necklaces and bracelets as well. It was made because of the Napoleonic War when France and Germany fought hard and long. Both countries ran out of war funds. Germany was first to turn to their aristocrats for money. The wealthy citizens gave their gold jewelry to the German treasury in exchange for iron jewelry.
