About the Item
Natural sapphires are surrounded by a halo of sparkling, brilliant cut diamonds in these luxurious earrings. Crafted entirely from 18 karat white gold, the earrings are set with just under 1 carat of bright diamonds. Central to each earring is a royal blue natural sapphire, perfectly matched for color and cut.
Hallmarked for 18K white gold, and weighing 6.7 grams. Lever backs ensure the earrings can be worn safely and comfortably. Each sapphire measures 3.8mm, and is surrounded by nine 0.05 carat round brilliant cut diamonds, further accented on the lever back by two 0.01 carat diamonds and one 0.005 carat diamond. Total diamond weight for the pair of earrings is 0.95 carats; the diamonds are G color and SI clarity.
A Note on the History of Sapphres
Sapphires have been prized since the Middle Ages and have continuously been one of the most desired, highly valued gemstones. In historical lore, the blue color of sapphires was representative of heaven and was said to attract divine favor. Early Christian kings wore sapphire rings to grant them protections, ancient Greeks wore sapphire when seeking answers from the oracle, and Hindus used sapphires during worship. In more modern jewelry history, Prince Charles gave Princess Diana a blue sapphire and diamond halo ring for their engagement in 1981; their son Prince William gave this same ring to Kate Middleton for their 2010 engagement.
Sapphires are one of the most practical gemstones for daily wear, rating a 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, just behind diamond. Sapphires are as durable as they are beautiful. Though modern, these earrings are very stylistically similar to floral halo designs from the Edwardian era.
