Convertible drop earrings designed by Rena Koopman. Beautiful one of a king artist studio pieces, created by the artist goldsmith Rena Koopman. These convertible day and night drop earrings has been crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with frosted satin finish. Suited with comfortable French omega backs for fastening clips and the addition of posts for pierced ears can be easily done. They are fitted with hooks to dismount the drops elements. The design as made with the difficult Japanese technique of mixing metals named Mokume. Weight: 30.3 Grams (19.42 Dwt). Measurements: Upper part 25.3 mm by 26.1 mm (1 x 1 Inch), full drop extended 25 mm by 100 mm (1 x 4 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark RENA© and the gold assay mark 18Kt. Rena Koopman, was educated as an art historian at Vassar College. Koopman visited Japan in the early 1970s to learn metalworking techniques. Koopman was dazzled both by the workmanship she observed and by the Japanese design aesthetic, which has since been the dominant influence on her work. Koopman shared her passion for Asian culture with her late husband Rad Smith, a Japanese sword enthusiast. “I see his influence in subtle things,” says Koopman, “like the shape of a necklace, which looks like the stones in our Japanese garden, and the swing of some of my earrings, which are like miniature swords.” Koopman creates works of beauty and serenity that will endure. “Satisfaction comes to me from the way shapes fit together visually and technically,” says the artist, “from colors of gold meeting and overlapping from lines and gestures that reflect light on the surface of the metal.” Mokume, is a Japanese metalworking procedure which produces a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns; the term is also used to refer to the resulting laminate itself. The term mokume-gane translates closely to "wood grain metal" or "wood eye metal" and describes the way metal takes on the appearance of natural wood grain. Mokume-gane fuses several layers of differently coloured precious metals together to form a sandwich of alloys called a "billet." The billet is then manipulated in such a way that a pattern resembling wood grain emerges over its surface. Numerous ways of working mokume-gane create diverse patterns. Once the metal has been rolled into a sheet or bar, several techniques are used to produce a range of effects. Collateral: They are accompanied by a presentation jewelry box.
