Pair of modernist mobile earrings designed by Ruth Berridge (1921-2004). Beautiful pair of modernist cinetic earrings, created in New York by the studio-artist and silversmith Ruth Berridge, back in the early 1960. This unique one of a kind earrings are very rare, and has been carefully crafted by the artist herself with very thin wires and hanging with several highly polished mobile elements in very fine sterling silver. Fitted with hinged omega backs for fastening clips. They are very comfortable and not heavy weighted, they move freely dramatically like an Alexander Calder sculpture, with each movement. Weight: 5.75 Grams, (3.68 Dwt). Measurements: 57 mm by 83 mm (2.25 X 3.25 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark, the silver assay mark and signed, "©BERRIDGE STERLING .925 H. MADE". Ruth Berridge, was a New York city modernist jewelery designer and was known for her work in silver. Ruth born in 1921 and was one of the premiere modernist jewelry designers in the 1950s. Her designs were produced for quite some time. She is most known for her modernist type work in silver yet did produce some pieces in gold. Her original sketches as well as jewelry is quite very rare today and hard to find. Note: The following is an excerpt from an ad in the NEW YORKER, dated May 17 th , 1952: “Excitingly different, these animated earrings are pure pleasure to wear. Light as a fairy’s touch, they lend an air of strange enchantment to the scene.” Ruth Berridges’ sometimes abstract expressionist, sometimes cubist designs rival the work of the best modernist artists. Perhaps her signature look can be considered the silver mobile jewelry, especially earrings that sway with the wearer’s movement. Handmade of sterling silver and spring wire, the delicately balanced mobiles were called modern sculpture in miniature and made with and without rhinestone or crystal accents. Ruth originated this design that was sold through Neiman Marcus as well as by such avant-garde shops as Design Research in New York; The Upper Story in Cambridge; and Nany's in San Francisco. Her mobile jewelry was once described as “eye-catching adornments which float in the air even when the wearer’s head is still and seem to have a life of their own.” Ruth herself said of her mobile earrings, “they behave like a flock of birds.".
