Spanish Colonial antique dangle Iberian earrings. Exceptionally rare antique pair created in Spain during the Spanish Colonial period, circa 1785. We are sure these dangle drop earrings were made in the Spanish Colombia and most probably in the city of Cartagena de Indias, back in the late 18th century. They was carefully crafted in solid yellow gold of 17 karats and parts in silver. These earrings are convertible for day and night, since the drop parts can be detached to wear the upper parts alone. The chandelier earrings have several moving links and are of a long length, which makes them rare and give them a very stunning look when worn. They are fitted with reverse lever wires and embellished with a nice selection of natural diamonds and emeralds, from Colombia. It should be noted that the diamonds and emeralds mount in this rare piece are definitely of Colombian origin. Seeing a piece from this period with this quality is very rare and difficult. Usually these pieces with that kind of precious stones were disassembled during the later Victorian period to create new pieces. This is a great collectible piece of great rarity, with an excellent craftsmanship and surely a collector's item. Diamonds: Mounted in custom prongs settings, with 4 old lasque-cut diamonds, 0.42 carats. Emeralds: Mount in boxes, with 10 natural Colombian Green emeralds of different shapes and cuts with a combined weight of about 2.80 carats. Birthstone: Diamonds for the month of December, Emeralds for May. Weight: 31.70 Grams, (20.32 Dwt). Measurements: Drop of 75 mm and a width of 21 mm with a deep of 10 mm 14 mm (2.95 x 0.83 x 0.39 Inches). Hallmarks: Electronically tested for .707/.999 equivalent to 17 karats gold and .850/.999 silver. Stamped with the maker's mark cartouche. Spanish Colonial Jewelry Traditional Spanish emerald jewelry designs are steeped in history and culture. Spain has a long tradition of working with emeralds, and Spanish jewelers are renowned for their unique designs that feature precious gemstones. Silver, 18 and 22 karats gold and colored gold were among the most commonly used metals for jewelry. Colored gold, particularly red and green, was used generously in creating floral and leaf pattern motifs, used most commonly in brooches, rings and buckles. While gold was in abundance, gemstones were not, so they used various techniques to achieve different looks for their jewelry such as the filigree technique, “kalado” or lace-like effect and changing the color of gold. Gemstones were scarce and only the upper class had access to them. Georgian Jewelry The term Georgian refers to an era in English history during the reign of Kings George I to King George IV from 1714 - 1840. Like the term Victorian (used for jewelry during Queen Victoria's rule), it is accepted in use as a term that refers to certain styles of jewelry. Pearls, sapphires, rubies and garnets were widely used in Georgian jewellery, often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. Rubies and pearls were a fashionable combination at the time. They were carefully crafted with modernist textured twisted pattern in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and embellished with a suite of twenty-six sleeping beauties blue turquoises. Accented with twelve white colorless diamonds and fitted at the reverse, with comfortable hinged French omega backs for fastening clips and gold posts for pierced ears. Turquoises: Mounted in four-prongs settings; with an assortment of 26 graduated round cabochons cuts carved from natural sleeping beauty blue turquoises, with a combined weight of about 5.20 carats. Diamonds: Mount in four-prongs settings, with 12 calibrated round brilliant cut diamonds, with a combined weight of about 0.36 carats, white colorless F/G color, VS-2 clarity. Birthstone: Turquoises for the month of December. Weight: Combined of 24.60 Grams (15.77 Dwt). Measurements: 40 mm by 21 mm (1.58 x 0.83 Inches).
