Victorian 14k Gold in Quartz Butterfly Dangle Earrings

About the Item

Gold-in-quartz was formed while the earth was still in its molten state. During the cooling and solidification process, veins of gold became trapped with the crystals of quartz in the mine. This created a very dramatic contrast between the white quartz and the yellow of the gold. Jewelry made from gold quartz became quite a fashion statement of the mid to late 1800's. During the Gold Rush era in the American West, from 1848 to 1855, most of the gold quartz was mined in California around the San Francisco area. A wonderful pair of gold quartz earrings from the Victorian (ca1850) era! These beautiful earrings are made of 14kt yellow and rose gold and feature a wonderful butterfly design decorated with multi-colored gold-in-quartz stones. Hanging from simple ear wires are the butterfly centerpieces, with a lifelike yellow and rose gold body including antennae, eyes, and etched body detailing. From each side of the body sprouts a three-segment wing, with each segment made up of a piece of gold-in-quartz in black, white, and rose quartz. At the top of the earrings are simple yellow gold earring wires that clasp in the back. The lifelike gold setting enhances the gold flecks in the stones, bringing them to life. These lovely earrings have a simple yet attractive look that would be perfect for everyday wear. They would make a gorgeous addition to any collection! Measurements: The earrings hang 1 1/8" long and the butterflies are approximatelty 5/8" tall, 3/4" wide, and just under 1/4" thick. Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the gold quartz stones, which are intact. The clasped earring wires are secure and in good working condition.
