About the Item
Vibrant, verdant emerald cabochons are set into precious platinum, surrounded by over 1/2 carat of brilliant, sparkling diamonds in these dangling mid-century earrings.
Emeralds are among the most valuable fine gemstones, at times being more desirable and valued than rubies and sapphires and even diamonds. First discovered more than 3000 years ago in ancient Egypt, the infamous emerald mines were worked by Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Known as “The Jewel of Kings,” emerald gemstones have a storied association with royalty; Cleopatra, for example, was known to wear emeralds not only to enhance her beauty, but also as a savvy display of wealth and the riches of Egypt. The ancient scholar Pliny wrote in praise of emeralds, their vibrant green color representative of a beautiful and hopeful spring.
Emeralds are often renowned for their “jardin” (the French term for “garden,”) made up of inclusions and giving each emerald a unique appearance. Though an 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, emerald’s composition and inclusions make emerald a stone that requires care when being worn. Emeralds should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.
