About the Item

Antique Late 18th – 19th Century Portuguese Chrysolite Chrysoberyl Pendant Earrings, circa 1800. Dramatic. Feminine. Utterly captivating. These museum-quality Portuguese earrings from the turn of the 19th century are a rare surviving example of the elegant pendeloque style — an iconic design worn to complement the towering hairstyles of the late 1700s. Each earring is a celebration of movement and grace, formed in an elongated, openwork silhouette and exquisitely set with pale green chrysoberyl gemstones, traditionally referred to as “chrysolite” or “crisólita” in the Iberian world. At the top, a navette-shaped cluster glows with cushion and round-cut stones, suspending a delicate bow tied in rose gold beading — a romantic flourish that gives way to a cascading drop, shimmering with a gradation of circular, oval, pear, and calibre-cut chrysoberyl. All stones are closed-set in silver, lending a soft, luminous character to the overall design. The earrings are fitted with antique screw-back mechanisms — a desirable detail for comfort of wear. In Portugal and Brazil, chrysoberyl enjoyed immense popularity at the end of the 18th century, often referred to as “oriental chrysolite” for its golden-green hue and glowing clarity. These earrings embody the height of that era's gemstone artistry, likely originating from the rich deposits of Minas Gerais, Brazil. A jewel of this calibre is more than an accessory — it's a piece of cultural heritage. Perfect for collectors of Iberian jewels or connoisseurs of Georgian refinement.
