About the Item
Created in the late 1910s to 1920s, these diamond and seed pearl chandelier earrings are set in platinum. Each earring is designed as a fully articulated cascade of tiered diamond elements suspending flexibly-set drop-shaped seed pearl accents. Rare and unusual, these fascinating all-white early Art Deco earrings are immaculately engineered to enliven the face with movement and sparkle.

Materials: 150 antique round-cut diamonds (approximate total weight 1.50 carats with VS-SI clarity and I/J color grade); 2 old mine-cut diamonds approximate total weight 0.20 carat with VS-SI clarity and I/J color grade); 22 seed pearls; Platinum

By the late 1910s, the work of Parisian couturier Paul Poiret had helped to revolutionize the way women dressed. These elongated earrings were a revival of the old chandelier style, one that now conformed to the new vertical silhouette Poiret had pioneered in "aesthetic dress" - garments that liberated women's bodies from the unnatural constraints of severe fitted clothing and undergarments. Hair could now be worn boyishly short and covering the upper ear, a style which favored elaborately long, articulated earrings that moved with the wearer. The style persisted, but only for so long - by the late 1930s, clips appeared, earrings became shorter, and even began to follow the curve of the ear upward. Old styles that fell out of favor were often shortened or entirely recycled, making these exquisite Art Deco chandeliers a rare and collectible survival.
