About the Item
These exquisite Georgian-era earrings, dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, feature shimmering paste gemstones set in crimped, pie-crust silver collets and finished with hand-wrought 18k gold wires—an elegant and historically faithful combination typical of the period. Each foil-backed stone measures approximately 7.5mm, giving the visual spread and presence of an Old Mine–cut diamond of roughly 1.50 carats each, or an approximate 3-carat diamond look for the pair. Their brilliance is due to the use of carefully applied metallic foil beneath the stones, a technique used during the Georgian era to enhance luminosity in candlelight. “Paste,” a high-lead, hand-cut glass formulated to emulate diamond, was an art form in its own right; the finest paste was crafted with exceptional skill and was prized for its fire, dispersion, and purity.
These earrings are remarkably light at just 1.5 grams each, making them extremely comfortable for daily wear. Their proportions—22mm in overall length—are graceful, flattering, and quietly opulent. Surviving Georgian jewels in this condition are increasingly scarce, and this pair stands out for its crisp mounts, intact foiling, and beautifully preserved surfaces free from the clouding or corrosion commonly found in pieces of this age.
Elegant, wearable, and historically significant, these earrings are a superb addition to any collection of early jewelry.
