The charm of a chandelier earring - long, ornate, and dangling with multiple tiers - is undeniable. Designed to accentuate the length of your neck, chandelier earrings are statement pieces that can be traced back to ancient cultures. The chandelier style, which included both earrings and pendants was first noted during Roman times, then reemerged during the Renaissance in the 1300s, and remained popular until the late Victorian period in the late 1800s. Technically the chandelier or girandole (French, meaning a branched support for candles or other lights) is comprised of three gemstone drops suspended from a single stone or more elaborate motif at the top. With revivals of antique style jewelry in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, many unique adaptations of the chandelier earring emerged.
These Spectra Fine Jewelry Emerald Diamond Chandelier Earrings, made in the 21st century, circa 2010s, are near textbook examples of the Romantic style, with three emerald drops suspended from an elaborate motif of three diamond arcs that cascade from a single stone. The composition recalls an elaborate fountain with the diamonds as cascading water droplets, perhaps at Versailles. The symmetrical pair of earrings designed for pierced ears and measuring 2.6 inches long (6.60 cm), is crafted in platinum, set with round diamonds weighing approximately 4.5 carats of F-H colors and VS-SI clarity, and features 6 cabochon emeralds weighing approximately 24 carats.
The emeralds are certified by GRS stating that are of Zambian origin with minor clarity enhancement. The emerald drops are suspended from drilled holes at the top, adding to their delightful movement and light reflection. Gem material that is cut as a cabochon are rarely transparent but do show very high color purity with no extinction, or dark shadows caused by the gem cut. The cabochon emerald is one of the oldest and most coveted gemstones since ancient times. Whether in a pendant, ring, or earring, an emerald cabochon adds bright color to a design.
The diamonds are bezel-set in an Art Deco style with milgrain, or mille-grain in French, which is a jewelry design technique where small beads or grains of metal are used to create borders and deliver an additional sparkle that complements the gemstones. The diamond lily-of-the-valley or bell-shaped flower in the center practically embodies the arrival of spring. This motif was favored by flappers early on in 1922, as we see also in fashion, when the shape was affixed to the fringes of their dresses. You can practically hear the tinkling of the bell as you walk wearing these dancing earrings articulated in seven sections.
Measures approx. 2.6” in length (6.7 cm). Emerald weight approx. 24 carats total. GRS certified of Zambian origin with minor clarity enhancement. Diamond weight approx. 4.5 carats total, F-H colors, VS-SI clarity. Overall weight approx. 15.04 grams, made in platinum. Circa 21st Century.
