About the Item
A Muzo emerald is an exclusive variety of emerald sourced from the emerald mine of the same name in Colombia, which is arguably the leading producer of excellent quality emerald gemstones the world over. This is often confused with “Muzo green” emeralds which are prized for their particular quality and exhibit a characteristic silky, rich green hue due to the presence of chromium and vanadium. This elegant pair of Spectra Fine Jewelry Colombian Emerald Diamond Halo Drop Earrings made in 2019 features two emerald-cut green emeralds weighing an estimated 4.55 carats total. The emeralds are accompanied by a report from Gemresearch Swisslab (GRS) stating that they are “Muzo Green” natural beryl type emeralds of Colombian origin with minor clarity enhancement.
Regardless of origin, perhaps 99% of all cut emeralds on the market arguably have some sort of enhancement for clarity. The GIA offers more context for this stating, “Due to their growth conditions in nature and recovery methods, most emeralds contain surface reaching features. For this reason, clarity enhancement is a common trade practice.” The Muzo mines are counted amongst the oldest sources of emeralds known, coveted by Mughal emperors, Renaissance princes, and Ottoman sultans, and are still one of the richest resources of emerald. While the origin of a gemstone at the mine level cannot be determined by gem testing laboratories because the gems usually get mixed during the sorting process, they can, however, analyze the differences in color, clarity, and average size of each gem. The GRS report evaluates that the fine emeralds featured in these earrings are reminiscent in hue of the varieties displaying the legendary colors found in the world renowned Muzo mines. They are formally described as “Muzo Green” and commonly known in the trade as “Old Mine” emeralds.
