If there were a stylized, jeweled depiction of the great The Winged Victory of Samothrace, a masterpiece of Greek Hellenistic art and one of the most famous sculptures at the Louvre, these White and Yellow Diamond Drop Earrings with an estimated total diamond weight of 29.86 carats would be that. Like the winged Greek goddess Nike which the 2nd century BCE statue depicts, these earrings seem to float through the air with a grace that is unmatched. Made by Spectra Fine Jewelry in the 21st century, 2019, the 3.35 inch long (8.5cm) 18K white gold earrings are set with round yellow diamonds with an estimated weight of 24.66 carats and round white diamonds with an estimated weight of 5.20 carats. The mirror image pair, designed for pierced ears fitted with posts and French clips, are designed in three articulated sections, so the delicate movement and the full surround of diamonds catches the light in all directions.
Each detail of these earrings is elegance personified. The motif at the top billows as if made of fine fabric, much like the long tunic in which The Winged Victory is dressed. The motif is composed of three fronds, curved in mirror image symmetry and embellished with white diamonds, that gently cup the earlobes and frame the face. The gesture of the two forms is much like Nike’s two noble wings outstretched. Just below, a single round diamond set with four prongs separates the elaborate stud from a more ornate version of the frond or wing motif, likewise embellished with white diamonds. In the second iteration, there is quite a bit more overlap and texture than is depicted in the elaborate stud just above. The way these two rounded motifs relate to one another like a call and response is simply exquisite.
Compositionally, the sleek yellow diamond-encrusted drop is held in contrast to the ornate textured form which suspends it. The drop is fully rounded like a three-dimensional teardrop ending in a pleasing curve. The yellow diamonds are set all around, paving the column in warm sunny sparkle. Even at the small size, the yellow pavé diamonds have a delightful hue that brings another dimension of radiance. Yellow diamonds are as rare and valuable as they are beautiful with only one out of approximately 10,000 carats a natural colored diamond. Teardrop earrings have both a timeless and vintage appeal. Some people believe this shape symbolizes tears of joy. Coupled with the sunny happy glow, these romantic feminine jewels have both graceful styling and meaning.
Each earring measures approx. 3.35” (8.5cm) in length. Top of the earrings are set with 5.20 carats of round white diamonds while the drops are set with 24.66 carats of round yellow diamonds. Total diamond weight is 29.86 carats. Overall weight approx. 44.40 grams, made in 18k white gold. Circa 2019.
