About the Item
Sardonyx is a banded agate form of Chalcedony Quartz. Hard stone cameos are much more difficult to carve than shell which is a significantly softer material. Most shell cameos were carved in Naples, Italy while the hard stone cameos were cut primarily in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
Lovely cameo earrings from the Victorian period (ca1880)! These fabulous earrings are crafted in 14k yellow gold and each displays a stunning sardonyx cameo with the profile of a Victorian woman. The cameos are held within multi-prong settings. The ornate detail portrayed in the cameo is exceptional with delicate features in her face, and lovely adornments in her hair. The brilliant gold background is detailed with fine twisted wirework and beadwork accents. Additionally, four foliage-shaped details border the stunning cameo. The earrings hang from complementary clasped earring wires. A beautiful pair of earrings, this is a must have for the cameo collector!
Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 1 1/2" long, are 3/4" at their widest and 3/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold or to the cameos and the clasped earring wires are in good working condition.
