Stylish and skilfully made, these Victorian Whitby Jet earrings are a timeless design.
Condition Report:
Excellent - The shaping of the hoop and link at the top of one earring is slightly different to that on the other. This is perhaps due to the hand-made nature of the earrings or perhaps because this feature has been broken at some point and later replaced. The reverse of one link is missing a jet backing for the pin too. These aspects do not detract however from the appeal and rarity of the main body of the earrings.
The Details...
These earrings are constructed from Whitby Jet. They feature a drop design carved with floral motifs, which resemble Forget-Me-Nots. The earrings are bordered with the 'Greek Key' repeating pattern. The earrings are for pierced ears and attach to the ears with hooks. Each earring measures 5cm x 2cm.
A Short History...
Black jewellery was popularised from 1861 by Queen Victoria, who, after the death of her beloved Prince Albert, insisted on only wearing black. People wanted to emulate the style of their Queen. This meant that jewellery made from Whitby Jet became immensely fashionable. It can be found along the North Yorkshire coastline, which Whitby nestles in the middle of, and requires the work of highly skilled lapidaries to be polished and formed into jewels. Whitby Jet's rarity and the talent required to create pieces from it made it both costly and coveted. A further special dimension to these earrings is their symbolism - the Greek Key repeating pattern was used in jewels to suggest eternity and the Forget Me Not was used to signify remembrance. The Victorian wearer of these earrings would have been remembering a loved one forever or would have known she would be cherished for eternity.
