About the Item
Rare, massive scale gold hoop shaped earrings with large polyhedral beads, each bead having four diamond shaped collars set with irridescent glass. The fine quality, large size and the use of highly prized Roman irridescent glass in these earrings suggest that they were created for a woman of high social standing.

References: a similar smaller example is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Accession Number: 22.50.9, Rogers Fund purchase 1922, hoop 1.5 inches; a pair of earrings with twisted gold hoops and polyhedral beads are in the British Museum, museum number 1923,0716.65, 32mm length
According to the British Museum curator notes, this type of earring originated in the East-Roman area of the Black Sea and Pannonia via Gothic migration and disappeared with the fall of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy.
