Beautiful hoops designed by Andre Vassort for Van Cleef Arpels. Gorgeous hoops clips earrings, created in Paris France by the historical jewelry house of Van Cleef Arpels, back in the 1969. This pair were carefully crafted at the atelier of the famous Parisian goldsmith Andre Vassort in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and finished with twisted patterns and high polished. They are fitted with hinged French omega for fastening clips and the addition of posts for pierced ears can be easily done, since they have a specific area to be installed. Weight: 38.60 grams (24.74 Dwt). Measurements: Diameter of 36 mm (1.42 Inches) and thickness of 8.5 mm (0.34 In). Hallmarks: Each piece is stamped with beautiful French marks; the eagle's head for the assay and guaranty of the 18Kt gold, the maker's maitre cartouche AV associated to the atelier of Andre Vassort, the serial numbers and signed in full, "©VCA 69 OR .750 109911 SDSG AV". André Vassort Little is known about this French jeweler, which is so often the case with the craftsmen and workshops behind the famous Maisons of the Place Vendôme. All around Paris, tucked away in discreet buildings, skilled and highly creative master craftsmen work anonymously for their high profile clients. One such building was 34 Rue Sainte Anne, where André Vassort set up his workshop, Atelier Vassort, registering his business and maker’s mark in December 1955. He quickly became one of the most recognized and sought after manufacturers of high quality French jewelry in the mid 20th Century. Van Cleef Arpels, Boucheron and Mauboussin, amongst others, trusted him not only with creating their own fine jewels but also with special commissions for clients. Frequently these clients would include Royalty of both the West and East as well as Hollywood legends. A particular creation of note is the spectacular emerald, ruby, pearl and diamond crown made on behalf of Van Cleef Arpels for the coronation of Empress Farah of Iran. He specialized in working with gold and drawing out warmth, movement and texture from the metal but also worked in platinum and across the board in terms of gemstones. His workshop grew to be one of the largest in Paris and alongside his loyal and experienced craftsmen he also employed apprentices. One of these recalls starting at the bench at just 17 years old and spending years learning from experts ‘in the pure artistic tradition’. Much of his jewelry would never have been marked so will remain ‘unknown’ to all except those who made it. However sometimes his mark appears alongside the signature of one of his famous client’s and occasionally it is seen on its own. When Louis Gérard left Van Cleef Arpels to start his own company M. Gérard in 1968, he chose to use his former employer’s workshop to create his jewelry. Over the next twenty years, Andre Vassort would produce some spectacular jewels for Gérard whose pieces are often noted for their superb manufacture. The Atelier closed in the early 1990’s but not before establishing itself as one of the most important manufacturers of French jewelry of the mid-late 20th Century. Whether you see it on a Boucheron bracelet, a Van Cleef Arpels sautoir or a pair of Vassort ear clips, the mark of André Vassort is a mark of quality craftsmanship and fine jewelry. One of the world’s foremost jewelry houses, Van Cleef Arpels is particularly noted for a focus on technical virtuosity, craftsmanship and artistry, evident since its beginning. Rather than create earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other adornments primarily for the aim of displaying of wealth and opulence, Van Cleef Arpels sought to produce jewelry that projected the wearer’s taste and style.

The company was formed a year after the 1895 marriage of Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a gem cutter, to Estelle Arpels, daughter of precious-stones dealer Salomon Arpels. Ten years later, Van Cleef Arpels opened its first boutique on the Place Vendôme in Paris, setting the march on a square now crowded with dealers in bijouterie. (The company still occupies the New York flagship store opened in 1939 at Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.)

Born from a union of expertise in both jewelry making and gem selection, Van Cleef Arpels distinguished itself with both the consistency of the color and clarity of its stones and the creativity of its designs. In doing so, the house would win a roster of dedicated, fashion-conscious clients that included the Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Hutton, Jacqueline Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor. In 1933, Van Cleef Arpels patented its trademark Mystery Setting — a technique by which gems are fitted into an intricate matrix of slots and “drawers” that keep the setting hidden. Another signal innovation was the Zip necklace, introduced in 1951, which can be worn either around the neck or, with the zipper closed, as a bracelet.

But as much as to the firm’s craftsmanship, clients have been drawn by the insouciance and playfulness of Van Cleef Arpels designers, as well as their attunement to the cultural climate. After the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, the company produced several lavish pieces featuring hieroglyphics and other Egyptian motifs to go along with the geometric Art Deco jewelry of that decade and the next. Following World War II, as symbols of freedom and rebirth, the firm focused on naturalistic forms such as birds, flowers, fruit and flying insects. High society’s 1960s fascination with the Near East and India prompted such pieces as the best-selling Alhambra necklace, popularized by Princess Grace.

Lately, attention among collectors and connoisseurs has centered on Van Cleef Arpels’s quality of workmanship as much as its glamour. The firm was the subject of a 2012 show at the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, as well as exhibitions at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, in 2013 and at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2014.
