About the Item
These are a scarcely seen and fabulous pair of elephant hair earrings dating from the late Victorian period. No elephants were harmed to get this hair. It came from the elephants tail. The largest hoop is 3.4 cm. The hoops are suspended from 9kt gold shepherds hooks. The total length is 6 cm. They are extremely light on the ear and move fluidly.
Elephant hair jewelry originated thousands of years ago with the early African tribesmen who believed elephants were the only connection between the Heavens and the Earth. They would incorporate elephant tail hair into their jewellery to ward off illness, protect them from harm, to bring them love and happiness.
Later from around the mid eighteenth century when India came under British rule or 'Raj', British colonists, traders and tourist would travel to India to go on safari and hunt exotic game. They would ride on the back of the elephant and when finished they would commission pieces of jewelry to be made from their mounts tail.
These earrings are in perfect condition. There is no loose or fraying hair. The fittings are sound and strong. Continue to keep them perfect by keeping them in their box.
