These flirtatious Fan Earrings are made in the Contemporary era, 2018, yet suggest a retro glamour that harkens back to the Art Deco period. This mirror image pair of pierced earrings with French clips is crafted in highly polished 18K yellow gold and embellished with 18 “invisibly set” baguette rubies weighing an estimated 2.55 carats total and 26 round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing an estimated 2.33 carats total of F-G color and VS clarity. The earrings measure 1-3/4 x 1/2 inches.
Two tiers of flexible radiating fan blades punctuate the lower part of the design with a staccato jauntiness, all in beautiful contrast to the swooping lyrical lines of two looped and crossed bows. The way the bow is tied is effortless and fresh and shows a skillful depiction of the fabric drape as fine as the French Maisons. The graceful fluid forms are highlighted with different stones to express different planes, creating varied luminescence and sparkle.
The “invisible setting” was a major technical innovation of the Art Deco Period where custom geometric-cut gemstones could be tightly set against one another without the use of prongs to create a seamless Machine Age look. This maker shows off their fine artisanship and references the stark elegance of this period in “invisibly setting” baguette rubies on the outside loop of the bow. By contrast, round brilliant-cut diamonds set with prongs swoop around above the blades and loop through the rubies.
