About the Item
These evocative earrings are skillful reproductions of late Victorian ear drops that would have hung from wires, hooked at the back. This updated version attaches directly to the ear with posts.
Platinum rounds with a cutout trefoil design are laid over a black enamel background. Tiny pave diamonds are set throughout, and larger bezel-set diamonds define the outer points and the center.
The 62 round diamonds are good quality. The larger, bezel-set stones range from 0.10 carats (the center stone) down to about 0.007 carats for a total diamond weight of 0.60 carats. All stones are earth-mined and untreated. In Victorian times, it would have been impossible to cut diamonds this small with the full 56 facets we see in today's round diamonds, so the maker of these earrings had the larger diamonds cut with some old-style touches, such as smaller tables and visible culets. We rate these G-H color and VS clarity.
The 48 smaller, pavé diamonds are single cuts, with a total diamond weight of 0.10 carats. We would rate them as H-I color and SI clarity.
The total diamond weight is estimated at 0.70 carats. The earrings weigh 7.1 grams and the oversized 14K white gold butterfly backs weigh 1.5 grams. (The total earring weight, with the backs, is 8.6 grams.)
The discs are 5/8" in diameter. (If you're trying to figure out their size relative to your head, note that our creepy freestanding ear mannequin is life-sized and our full head mannequin is also life-sized, but she's petite.)
These were probably made in the 1990s. They are not signed but are marked "PT" for platinum.
