This is a gorgeous and very rare pair of Antique Victorian Horse Essex Crystal Earrings in 14 Karat Gold. These are spectacular Museum Quality earrings. The Essex Crystal earrings are in superb condition. They depict wonderful horse heads and are the perfect jewels for lovers of the Equestrian, Horse, Horse Racing, Dressage, Horse Show worlds. The images are carved into the reverse of the crystal and then hand painted with enamel. These are the work of master artisans! The domed crystals are set in 14 Karat gold. The earrings have posts. The Essex Crystals date to the 19th - early 20th Century.
Essex Crystal
The colloquially termed ‘Essex Crystal,’ or reverse carved intaglio is to many an intricate, fascinating, and eye-catching aspect of jewelry that never fails to put a smile on your face. Reverse carved intaglios emerged around 1860, in the ‘High’ Victorian Era, a time of increased prosperity and subsequently demand for jewels. Peter Hinks in Nineteenth Century Jewellery observes that “a new adventurousness in the treatment of gems” was very much present in the 1860s and 70s, with reverse carved intaglios one of the most adventurous!
Reverse carved intaglios are created through a meticulous process. The carving is painted, sometimes with brushes only a single hairs width and typically sealed with a mother of pearl backing. As a result, the image appears floating within the cabochon when viewed from the front.
The earrings are 1/2 inch (13mm) in diameter and are 5mm deep.
The earrings are 14 Karat gold. The posts are 10 Karat gold.
