Discovered in the early 20th century, it was named after George Frederick Kunz, a renowned gemologist. Its color results from traces of manganese, and it exhibits strong pleochroism, meaning it can show different shades when viewed from different angles.
With a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, kunzite is durable but requires careful handling due to its perfect cleavage, which makes it prone to breaking under pressure. It is often used in rings, pendants, and earrings, with faceted cuts enhancing its natural glow.
