This beautiful 11.94 Ct Australian gem crystal opal, carved into a nautilus shell, is a truly exceptional addition to any collection, mined by Sue Cooper herself. Its rarity, coupled with the amazing shell carving, captivates connoisseurs with its vibrant play of ocean colours, including sea greens and turquoise blues.
Mined at Sue’s Russells opal mine in western Queensland, Australia, in 2021, this opal gem is a remarkable find. What distinguishes it is its origin: formed within a void, likely left by a decaying tree branch or root, it underwent a rare transformation into an opalized replica of a branch or a ‘jelly mould fossil’. Though some opalized branches from the Russell’s mine are quite large, Sue has expertly identified smaller translucent and transparent gem-quality pieces deserving of expert carving.
Among Sue’s sea-themed collection, this carved Nautilus shell is a miniature masterpiece. The chambered nautilus is one of the oldest surviving creatures in Earth's oceans. Admired for their intricate iconic spiral shells, nautiluses are often born with four chambers and add more as they grow. They are symbolic of nature's renewal and precision.
