About the Item
From the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, Wolfers was a household name. The name was synonymous with luxury, quality and high artistry of Belgian origin.
The Wolfers company, manufacturer of silverware and jewellery, was founded in Brussels in 1850 by Louis Wolfers. Particularly under the management of his sons Philippe, Max and Robert, the business was able to establish itself internationally and acquired important markets in Western and Central Europe. The Art Nouveau objects designed by Philippe Wolfers were the subject of accolades from the most important art critics. His unique Art Nouveau jewellery was displayed all over Europe and Philippe Wolfers' name equalled that of the Frenchman René Lalique. None other than Victor Horta designed the store's magnificent retail building, which reinforced its ambitions.
Where for many artists the Art Nouveau period meant an end point, Philippe Wolfers managed to evolve perfectly towards Art Deco through sculpture. Gioconda , the interior and accessories he designed for the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris, became legendary.
After Philippe's death in 1929, his son Marcel succeeded him as artistic director. In addition to the new impetus that Marcel gave the luxury products company, he profiled himself as a gifted sculptor and a gifted lacquer artist. Following the example of his friend Jean Dunand, he breathed new life into this age-old Asian technique.
This lavishly illustrated book is the result of years of research. The authors were given the opportunity to consult the entire family archive. In addition to scientific contributions, it also includes the reasoned catalogue of the oeuvres of Philippe and Marcel Wolfers. 495 pages. 2680 grams.
