About the Item

“La Belle Époque” was an era full of the very rich and lavish lifestyles. With no income tax wealthy industrialists virtually became American royalty or at least aristocrats. A grand formal style emerged for those deemed “high society” with dressing for dinner a routine affair and intellectual and cultural converse reigned. Balls, cotillions and tea parties were all gala affairs and the foundation of these whirlwind social circles with all expected and anticipated the pomp and circumstance. Many a jewel was purchased in the name of elite consumption and this sumptuous tiara of 14k yellow gold would (or did) fit right into the festivities. Designed as a feathered plume, thirteen (13) faceted teardrops of imperial topaz (with a total estimated weight of 7.25 carats) and thirteen (13) old European cut diamonds (with a total estimated diamond weight of .40 carats) create a floral spray of sophistication and understated elegance. Behind the gems is a fitting constructed specifically to hold a feather such as that of a peacock, if so desired. The bandeau has a loop at each end to add elastic or a ribbon to hold under the hair. As the plume is hinged to the bandeau, the tiara can be worn in any number of variations. The spectacular piece is accompanied by its original box of issue with an interior of cream colored satin. Circa late 19th to early 20th century. Measurements: Decorative are from base to top topaz is 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length by 3-1/8 inches (7.7 cm) in width. Flexible band is 10-3/4 inches (27.5 cm) in length and can be safely secured with an additional band. This hair ornament should fit most. Weight of 13.0 grams (8.4 dwt).
