About the Item

This book written by Lord Twining is a truly monumental work, which deals comprehensively with the history of European regalia and crown jewels. It covers a period of seventeen centuries and the information given is encyclopaedic. Each of the 27 chapters deals with a different christian country in Europe and also some of the personal jewelled ornaments in the great treasuries of these royal collections, among these are some of the most fabulous diamonds, pearls and precious stones known. The book is illustrated with 230 pages of plates containing about 800 photographs. In 1937, “Twining was charged with organizing the local celebrations for the coronation of King George VI” in Uganda, where he served the British Empire as an assistant district commissioner. “This task appealed to… [his] abiding interest in everything regal, stimulated by an unforeseen and informal encounter with the Prince of Wales in up-country Uganda some years earlier, and reflected in his ever-growing interest in crown jewels and regalia. He had, too, an almost boyish delight in and capacity for bringing joy and color into the lives of other people, especially the poor” (DNB). In this volume, Twining exhaustively treats the royal regalia of not only Britain but also France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, the Holy See and numerous other European nations from Austria to Yugoslavia. “Apparently only a few copies were printed as is evidenced by the sustained, strong demand for copies in the antiquarian market”
