About the Item
Mid-Century Graduated butterscotch amber beads necklace composed of polished natural amber beads in warm honey, caramel, and deep butterscotch tones. The beads are a mix of rounded ovals and slightly irregular forms, with natural marbling, cloudy inclusions, and colour variation typical of genuine Baltic amber.
The necklace features a central run of larger beads tapering evenly toward smaller beads at the back, giving it a classic, well-balanced profile. Finished with a gold clasp and currently strung on secure nylon string, indicating a later restring.
Length: 60 cm (excluding clasp)

Weight: 38 grams
This is a wearable, everyday-length necklace rather than a short collar or long sautoir.
Our overall assessment:
• Amber: genuine natural amber rather than pressed or reconstituted (not tested but examined by specialist). Colour variation, internal clouding, and surface polish are consistent with real Baltic material.
• Butterscotch colour: Likely originally opaque yellow amber that has oxidised over time, which is normal and desirable.
• Beads: Presence of a couple of small gauged beads which can be hidden as the beads rotate on the string, but add to the history of the piece.
• Stringing: Nylon confirms a modern restring. Original stringing would have been silk or cotton.
• Clasp: Gold tone; without hallmarks visible, estimated 9k gold.
Most likely: 1930s–1950s (interwar to mid-century).

Amber is fossilized tree resin which has been prized as a gemstone since antiquity. It has been used as jewelry from 13,000 years ago with amber ornaments having been discovered in Mycenean tombs. Amber and amber extracts have been used medicinally in traditional Chinese medicine to "tranquilize the mind". Natural amber produces a distinct pinewood fragrance which when heated under the right conditions, produces oil of amber, likened to musk, an aphrodisiac. In ancient China it was customary to burn amber at large festivals and celebrations. Baltic Amber is particularly sought after for its beautiful honey yellow color.
