About the Item
Antique banded agate necklace with its 14 karat gold clasp. Long necklace composed of 95 banded agate beads. The beads are arranged in a cascade, alternating between small and large beads. The clasp is hidden in a bead of the necklace and secured with a chain. Antique mourning necklace, 19th century.
Length: 88 cm - Min. to max. pearl diameter: 0.5 mm to 1.3 mm
Weight: 100.81 gr
In the 19th century, black or brown banded agate was highly prized in jewelry, particularly for Victorian mourning jewelry such as brooches, rings, or pendants, set in gold or silver. A court mourning set is presented in La Bijouterie Française au XIXe siècle 1800-1900, Henri Vever, vol. 2, p. 229.
